One woman is dead and a man is hospitalized in critical condition following an early morning Canada Day shooting on the 400 block of Flora Avenue.
Wednesday’s death marked Winnipeg’s 20th homicide of the year.
The man and woman were walking in the area at approximately 3:15 a.m., when they were both shot, police said.
The wounded man was able to make his way to a convenience store no more than a block away, according to Winnipeg Police Service Const. Jay Murray.
At the store, someone contacted first responders. The man was transported to hospital in critical condition.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the woman’s body at the spot they believe she was shot, Murray said.
Officers were still in the vicinity at 11:30 a.m. Yellow tape and police cars blocked off Salter Street from its intersection with Flora Avenue to just past the 7-Eleven. Police had also blocked off Flora Avenue past Powers Street.
Residents in the area said they didn’t hear anything so late at night, nor did they know why the area was being blocked off. One man said his wife saw police car lights between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The homicide unit is now looking for suspects. Police don’t yet have details regarding the shooter, but they’re looking for tips from the public that could help investigators, Murray said.
"There’s a lot of questions that still need to be answered," he said. "It’s still relatively early in the investigation."
Anyone with information about the fatal incident can call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
