Hundreds of downtown apartment dwellers in seniors’ high-rises got a breakfast treat Wednesday morning. A bag with two bananas, an apple and an orange was left at their doors, along with a flyer from Logan Liberal candidate Joe Chan.

One recipient chuckled and said everyone on her floor got a bag and they were a hit. They got people’s attention. "But you can’t buy my vote for a bag of fruit," the woman joked.

Chan good-naturedly dismissed bribery as a goal for the fruity treats. He said the idea is to grab people’s attention and he’s glad it worked.

Other candidates hold events to give out food, like hot dogs. "But I want to do something better," he said. He’s handed out 8,000 smokie dogs in addition to the 1,200 to 1,500 bags of fruit. He said he buys the fruit out of his campaign expenses.

"People spend too much on flyers. The fruit bag is a healthier way to get their attention."
