Defence line has been Jets' saving grace so far
WINNIPEG — Back-end support has helped keep the Winnipeg Jets afloat (4-4-1) through their first nine games.
Game No. 10 comes tonight at the MTS Centre against the 5-5-0 Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m. CT, TSNJets, TSN1290) with defenceman Toby Enstrom leading all NHL blueliners in scoring.
Enstrom has two goals and 12 points in the nine games.
"I’ve scored a lot of points," Enstrom said this morning after the game-day skate downtown. "It’s always fun to score points and help the team out in that way.
"But I’ve been playing a little too much up and down and I want to change that and show everybody that I want to be that solid player that the team can always count on."
Enstrom’s success has come with the team’s defence corps hobbled.
Zach Bogosian has yet to play a game, though he was back on the ice with his teammates for practice this morning. As well, Dustin Byfuglien, Enstrom’s regular partner, has been missed for three games and is certainto miss a fourth tonight.
"No, I mean we have a great bunch of defencemen on this team," Enstrom said about missing Byfuglien. "I’ve been playing with Buff for a long time and it’s sad seeing him out but hopefully he’ll be back soon."
Tonight’s game marks former Jets defenceman and Manitoba Moose coach Randy Carlyle's NHL coaching debut in the MTS Centre and is the first of three meetings between the teams this season.
