Local shooting spoofed on SNL

A local headline landed smack-dab in the middle of Saturday Night Live -- though the story itself is no laughing matter.
On Saturday, the 37-year-old sketch-comedy institution used a Winnipeg Free Press story to bolster its Weekend Update parody news segment.
In the 14-second bit, Weekend Update host Seth Meyers described a case originally reported by Free Press crime reporter Mike McIntyre last week -- although he did not specifically mention Winnipeg.
"A woman in Canada who was shot in the eye during a New Year's Eve party refused medical attention until she finished her beer," Meyers announced, before delivering his zinger: "She's what's known in Canada as a 'keeper.' "
The story was first reported in the Jan. 5 edition of the Free Press. The woman was the victim of a shooting at a house in the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue that also killed 46-year-old Michael Warren Sinclair. When paramedics arrived, the 30-year-old woman was heavily impaired by alcohol or drugs, and asked to finish her drink before being rushed to the hospital.
The woman remained in hospital last week, but was in stable condition and expected to survive. No arrests have been made in the case.
The story spread rapidly around the world, landing on international news outlets and popular online news-sharing sites and garnering almost 400 comments by early Sunday evening.
