Price of city homes increased at one of the fastest paces in Canada
WINNIPEG — The cost of a new home in Winnipeg increased at one of the fastest paces in the country in 2011, new Statistics Canada figures show.
The agency said today that Winnipeg’s new housing price index rose 4.6 per cent between December 2010 and the final month of 2011.
Only two of the other 20 Canadian metropolitan regions surveyed had bigger 12-month price gains — Toronto/Oshawa at 6.3 per cent and Regina at 5.3 per cent.
Winnipeg’s price hike was spread out over almost the entire year. The only month where there wasn’t a price increase from the previous month was December, when prices remained unchanged here and in 11 other metropolitan regions. That followed a 0.2 per cent increase in November.
Nationally, Canada’s new housing price index rose 0.1 per cent in December, following a 0.3 per cent increase the month before. The increase for the year was a little more than half that of Winnipeg — 2.5 per cent.
