The woman who was in an SUV that tumbled off the Disraeli Bridge Wednesday afternoon died, Winnipeg police confirmed Wednesday night.

Sources told the Free Press a 19-year-old woman was the lone occupant of the vehicle that crashed through the railing on the bridge and landed upside down on the bank of the Red River.

At about 3:15 p.m., the woman was removed from the crumpled wreck of the vehicle that remained on the snowy bank, its wheels in the air. She was loaded onto a stretcher and then into an ambulance, which negotiated its way through backed-up traffic to get to Health Sciences Centre.

Police said she was in unstable condition following the crash.

Blaine Stead saw the accident as he was driving over the Disraeli at about 2:30 p.m. He saw the vehicle slide and crash through the railing on the south section of the bridge, breaking several panels of the barrier.

"The bridge surface was just like glass; everybody was sliding all over the place," he said.

At least a dozen emergency vehicles attended the scene.

The Winnipeg Police Service said the investigation in the area was finished at 9:30 p.m. and the area was reopened to traffic.
