City councilor Harvey Smith, right, hands out literature in a bus stop at the University of Winnipeg to protest a Transit fare hike on Tuesday. Smith fell after the protest and fractured his pelvis.
Coun. Harvey Smith is in hospital with a fractured pelvis.
Smith's executive assistant Chris Hurley said Smith slipped and fell on Main Street Tuesday afternoon when he was returning from a University of Winnipeg protest regarding the transit fare hike. Hurley said Smith was crossing Main Street and slipped on the road slush in the southbound lane by city hall.
A passerby helped Smith off the road, and someone phoned an ambulance.
Hurley said Smith, 75, is in good spirits at Health Sciences Centre and is slated to have surgery to repair his fractured pelvis sometime today. While doctors expect him to make a full recovery, Hurley said it's likely Smith will remain in hospital for a few weeks.
"He's in good humour and his mind is sharp," Hurley said. "Doctors say he'll make a speedy recovery."
"I want to wish a speedy recovery to Councillor Harvey Smith injured yesterday in an accidental fall," said Mayor Sam Katz in a statement.
"Doctors have said that his recovery time will be significantly reduced since he leads such an active lifestyle and everyone here at city hall wishes him well and we hope to see him return very soon."
