Winnipeg mother watches as car stolen with child inside
A shocked mother watched a suspected car thief roar off with her young son late Wednesday afternoon.
Her child was found unharmed soon after, police said this morning.
Police were called to the 100 block of Park Place East around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Const. Jason Michalyshen said that a 40-year-old woman had left the keys in the ignition and her son in the rear seat while going to the door of a home to pick up her daughter.
"It was at this time she turned to observe a male suspect operating her 2011 Acura MDX driving away at a high rate of speed with her son still in the vehicle. The victim gave chase on foot for a short distance, but returned to the residence where police were notified," he said.
"The vehicle was located abandoned in the area of the 700 block of Park Boulevard South. It was also learned that the young child was located unharmed by an area resident. A short time later, the mother and son were reunited."
The woman’s purse was missing from the vehicle.
The suspect is described as a young Caucasian man about 20 years old, with short dark hair, and wearing dark clothing. He had been seen as a passenger in a red SUV just before the incident occurred.
No one was injured as a result of the incident. The investigation is continuing by members of the District 6 Crime Unit.
