Weather warning issued for Winnipeg, much of southern Manitoba
Environment Canada has put Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba under a weather warning ahead of a low pressure system headed our way.
"Ahead of this system is an area of snow which will affect Southern Manitoba today. The main band of snow will push into the region this morning. A general 5-10 cm is expected, however the Swan River area will be the most likely to see 10 cm total by this evening," the weather warning noted.
It’s not just the snow, though.
The big problem is wind blowing that snow around so much that you may not be able see very far in front of you, especially on highways. The Perimeter Highway and open areas are going to be the worst.
Environment Canada issues warnings like this when visibility is cut to one kilometre or less and wind speeds are 30 kilometres an hour or more for three or more hours.
"Visibilities may be reduced to near zero at times," the advisory warns.
The good news is the storm won’t last long in southern Manitoba.
The low pressure system will track through southern Saskatchewan today and be in North Dakota this evening.
Motorists are advised to call Manitoba Highways at 511 or type in your highway number at http://web20.gov.mb.ca/RIMobile/
