Homer Simpson could count on one hand the number of Manitoba artists nominated for Juno Awards this year — four.

Doc Walker’s 16 & 1 is up for country album of the year; Bruthers of Different Muthers’ Speakers of Tomorrow is nominated in the aboriginal album of the year category; Bright Morning Stars by the Wailin’ Jennys is up for roots & traditional album: group; and Ken Mode’s Venerable is nominated in the new category, metal/hard music album of the year.

Additionally, several expats were nominated for awards including James Ehnes (classical album of the year: large ensemble or soloist(s)); Twilight Hotel (roots & traditional album: group); Dave Young Quintet (traditional jazz album); Bob Rock (producer); and the late Ann Southam (classical composition).

City and Colour, Dan Mangan, Drake, Feist, Hedley and Nickelback lead all nominations with four apiece.

Close behind with three nods each are Avril Lavigne, Deadmau5 and Michael Buble.

CTV announced the nominations Tuesday morning while also revealing that Star Trek icon William Shatner will host the awards April 1 in Ottawa. The majority of the awards will be given out on March 31 during a non-televised industry gala.

Feist, Deadmau5, Nickelback and City & Colour are among the scheduled performers.
